Polymer photonic bandgap fibers .
Tibi, Francois and Ivan) visited Maksim Skorobogatiy's lab, state of the art in micro- and nanophotonics, mid-IR and THz photonics, optical sensors and smart textiles. Maksim's team covers form theory/design to the fabrication of optical fibers. Our first, short-term, interest is the design and fabrication of intrinsically bend-sensitive fibers, glass and polymer, used for the fabrication of force transducers in our Mosquito project. We have an eye on the photonic bandgap fibers (see links bellow) which can be fabricated with different diameters, but we'll also explore other designs. Our second, longer-term, interest is the photonicµfluidic devices that Maxime and his team are able to build, which can be used for bio- and chemical sensing (see the second link bellow), part of our local food systems projects.
Maksim's reaction to our projects was positive, and we decided to start sketching a grant together, which would be spent on the design and the fabrication of a customized bend-sensitive optical fiber for force sensing see (our Mosquito project).
For now we see Maksim as a partner, unless he decides to join SENSORICA as an active member.
